The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a Computer Support Specialist III to join our team.
We seek applicants who have a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate education.
The person in this position will be responsible for:
Management and maintenance of all lab equipment for all lower-division physics and astronomy labs.
Development of new laboratories including either purchased or built equipment.
Assisting with upper-division lab courses, including equipment management, purchasing, setup and assistance in teaching.
the management and maintenance of all computing facilities in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Acquisition, maintenance, and software support of computers in these facilities.
Oversight of the Department's astronomical laboratory and observing facilities, both on campus and at the Blue Mountain Observatory.
Supervision and training of student employees to provide support for the computing, laboratory, and observing facilities.
Upkeep and development of UM's Planetarium - the Stargazing Room.
Assisting faculty and staff with any needs they may have.
Provide astronomy and physics outreach, as time permits, through visits to schools and visits from school and other groups.
Required Skills Knowledge of a wide variety of software used in physics and astronomy education, and the ability to keep computer resources current by researching, acquiring, installing, configuring, and maintaining both PC and Mac software.
Ability to write proposals to create and upgrade computing facilities.
Ability to develop and maintain campus observing facilities, including the Skaggs observing deck.
Ensure that telescopes and instrumentation are kept in good working order, and acquire new equipment as needed.
Knowledge necessary to ensure that the Blue Mountain Observatory, its electrical and mechanical systems, and all observing equipment, are kept in good working order (mainly in the summer months).
Knowledge and ability to run public open house nights at the Blue Mountain Observatory.
Ability to teach a limited number of introductory astronomy and physics laboratory sections.
Ability to serve as a resource for area teachers on questions relating to astronomy.
Ability to hire, supervise, and train students and computer lab monitors.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Minimum Required ExperienceBachelor's degree in a physical science or engineering, preferably physics or astronomy or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
